BMI Calculator

BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. Asian populations carry health risk at lower BMI, so choose the Asian cut-offs if you are of South Asian origin.

Cut-offs

How it works

BMI = weight in kg ÷ (height in metres)². WHO categories: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, 30 and above obese. Asian-Indian cut-offs: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–22.9 healthy, 23–24.9 overweight, 25 and above obese.

BMI does not tell muscle from fat. Athletes, older adults and pregnant women should not rely on it. For anyone under 18 use age-based growth charts.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Indian cut-offs lower?

South Asians tend to carry more body fat, especially around the waist, at the same BMI, which raises diabetes and heart risk earlier.

What else should I measure?

Waist circumference (a healthy range is under about 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women in India), blood pressure and blood sugar.

Is BMI accurate for bodybuilders?

No. Muscle weighs more than fat, so very muscular people can show a high BMI while being lean.
